Background:

Xenotransplantation is a promising solution for organ failure but risks transmitting porcine viruses.
A recent pig heart transplant resulted in porcine herpesvirus transmission, underscoring screening needs.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and present comprehensive viral screening protocols for donor pigs.
To ensure the safety of xenotransplantation by identifying potentially pathogenic porcine viruses.

Main Methods:

Established sensitive and specific PCR-based techniques for detecting multiple porcine viruses (PCMV/PRV, HEV, PCV1-4, PLHV-1-3, PERVs, PPV, TTSuV1,2, APPV, SARS-CoV-2).
Developed immunological assays to detect antibodies for PCMV/PRV, HEV, PLHVs, and PERVs.

Main Results:

A complete set of updated protocols for comprehensive viral screening in donor pigs was established.
