With growing environmental and health concerns over conventional flame retardants, polysaccharide-based hydrogels have gained significant attention as sustainable, bio-degradable, and high-performance new generation of green flame-retardant material. In this review, we comprehensively address recent advances in the preparation, the application for flame-retardant, and emerging prospects of polysaccharide-based hydrogels. First, the flame-retardant mechanism of polysaccharides-based hydrogel is summarized. Then, the strategies of the regulation for polysaccharides-based hydrogel network structure are discussed via the type of polysaccharides, including chitin, chitosan, cellulose, starch, alginate, and carrageenan. Next, the applications of polysaccharide-derived flame-retardant hydrogels are systematically categorized, emphasizing breakthroughs in textiles, wearable electronics, and biodegradable packaging systems. Finally, this review offers insights into the future development of polysaccharide-based hydrogel flame-retardant materials, providing guidance for the design and applications of hydrogel-based green flame-retardant materials.
