Background:

Choroidal coloboma is a rare congenital disorder from incomplete embryonic optic fissure closure.
It can range from small to large, affecting multiple ocular structures.
Retinal detachment (RD) is an occasional complication of choroidal colobomas.

Purpose of the Study:

To characterize retinal detachments (RDs) associated with choroidal colobomas in pediatric and adult patients.
To understand the histological features and management of these specific RDs.

Main Methods:

Review of histological studies and clinical case data on RDs and choroidal colobomas.
Analysis of the anatomical relationship between colobomas and retinal pathology.
Evaluation of treatment outcomes and recurrence rates.

Main Results:

Histology shows absence of normal choroidal tissue, RPE, and retina within colobomas.
Retinal tears frequently occur at the intercalary membrane (ICM) within or along the coloboma margin.
The inner retina thins and merges with the ICM, predisposing to tears.

Conclusions:

Vitrectomy, endolaser photocoagulation, and long-term tamponade are recommended treatments for RD associated with choroidal coloboma.
Careful consideration of macular involvement in laser treatment is necessary.
High recurrence rates and the need for multiple surgeries are characteristic of these cases.
