Patients' Perspectives on Opportunistic Salpingectomy at the Time of Nongynecologic Surgery

To identify barriers and facilitators from patients' perspectives for the implementation of opportunistic salpingectomy during nongynecologic surgeries.

This was a qualitative study based on individual in-depth interviews with patients (N=21) from six academic and nonacademic Dutch hospitals that have undergone various nongynecologic surgeries. Open and axial coding of semistructured interviews was used to explore barriers and facilitators from patients' perspectives, categorized according to the implementation domains of Grol and Wensing and Flottorp et al: innovation, health care professional, patient, social context, organizational context, and economic and political context.

Nineteen of 21 patients (90.5%) would opt for opportunistic salpingectomy during nongynecologic surgery. Barriers and facilitators were found in all domains, with most encompassed in the patient domain. The most relevant barriers were lack of patient awareness regarding the existence and rationale of opportunistic salpingectomy, lack of completion of childbearing, and the overall low ovarian cancer risk. The most important facilitators were the prevention of ovarian cancer and its lethality, patients' confidence in their treating physician, provision of adequate information, and the loss of fallopian tube function after completion of childbearing.

This study identified key barriers and facilitators across multiple domains, providing a basis to develop a tailored implementation strategy aimed to implement opportunistic salpingectomy use during nongynecologic surgeries.
