Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of cryotherapy (CT), normothermic water compression (NWC), and cryocompression (CC) on muscle damage, proprioception, and performance after eccentric exercise.
  • To evaluate the recovery patterns of muscle damage indicators, proprioception, and performance parameters following different therapeutic interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Forty healthy males underwent maximal eccentric quadriceps contractions.
  • Interventions included CT, NWC, and CC, with a control group.
  • Muscle damage (thigh circumference, VAS soreness), proprioception (position sense, force sense), and performance (ROM, MVIC) were assessed pre- and post-exercise for five days.

Main Results:

  • Cryocompression (CC) and NWC significantly reduced thigh circumference compared to the control group.
  • CC significantly reduced muscle soreness (VAS) compared to the control group, with faster return to baseline.
  • No significant differences were found in proprioception or performance parameters across any groups.

Conclusions:

  • Cryocompression effectively reduces limb swelling and muscle soreness following EIMD.
  • Normothermic water compression also mitigates limb swelling.
  • Neither cryocompression, cryotherapy, nor normothermic water compression significantly enhanced proprioception or performance parameters in this study.
