Immunological Memory01:23

Immunological Memory

15.1K
Immunological memory, a pivotal pillar of the adaptive immune system, is responsible for the body's ability to remember and respond more swiftly and effectively to previously encountered pathogens. This remarkable feature is what makes vaccines so effective in preventing diseases.
What is Immunological Memory?
Immunological memory is an integral function of the immune system that allows it to recognize and react more rapidly and effectively to pathogens previously encountered. This feature...

Summary

Swiss guidelines for pneumococcal vaccination in children with cochlear implants are not always followed, leading to inadequate immunity. An extra vaccine dose for children over two years old before implantation is recommended.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatrics
  • Immunology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Assessing adherence to Swiss pneumococcal vaccination guidelines in children with cochlear implants.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of pneumococcal vaccines in eliciting adequate immunity in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if Swiss pneumococcal vaccination guidelines are followed for children with cochlear implants.
  • To assess the level of pneumococcal vaccine immunity achieved in these children.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of vaccination records and serotype-specific pneumococcal IgG concentrations.
  • Data collected from January 2009 to December 2023 at the Western Switzerland University Cochlear Implants Center.

Main Results:

  • Only 56% of children under two years achieved protective seroprotection despite vaccination.
  • Children aged two and above receiving an additional vaccine dose showed 100% protective seroprotection.
  • Seroprotection declined within five years post-vaccination, with lower immunity observed in children aged 2-5 years.

Conclusions:

  • Proactive administration of an additional pneumococcal vaccine dose is recommended for children aged two and above before cochlear implant surgery.
  • Periodic monitoring of serotype-specific antibody levels every five years is advised to guide booster vaccinations.
