Background:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) significantly impacts the elderly. The Acute Care for Elders (ACE) model may enhance management outcomes, but its efficacy for COPD remains unclear.
Objective:
To assess whether the ACE model improves outcomes for elderly COPD patients compared to standard care, focusing on COPD knowledge, symptom burden, functional status, exercise capacity, and satisfaction.
Methods:
This randomized controlled trial involved 84 COPD patients (60-80 years) admitted to a geriatric ward. Patients were assigned to the ACE group (n = 42) or standard care (n = 42). Outcomes, including COPD knowledge, CAT scores, Barthel Index, 6MWD, and satisfaction, were evaluated at admission, discharge, and 30 days post-discharge.
Results:
The ACE group demonstrated significant improvements in all outcomes at 30 days post-discharge, with superior COPD knowledge, reduced symptom burden, and enhanced functional status.
Conclusion:
The ACE model effectively improves outcomes for elderly COPD patients, supporting its implementation in geriatric wards.
