Ocular Biometry and Refractive Prediction in Short Eyes: A Comparison of Two Swept-Source Optical Coherence
1Saevit Eye Hospital, 1065 Jungang-ro, Ilsandong-gu, Goyang 10447, Republic of Korea.
Two swept-source optical coherence tomography biometers showed good agreement for ocular biometry in short eyes. Both devices accurately predicted refractive errors after cataract surgery, despite minor differences in axial length measurements.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Biomedical Engineering
- Medical Devices
Background:
- Accurate ocular biometry is crucial for predicting refractive outcomes after cataract surgery, especially in eyes with short axial length (AL).
- Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometers offer advanced capabilities for measuring ocular parameters.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare the performance of two SS-OCT biometers, IOLMaster® 700 and ARGOS®, in measuring ocular biometry.
- To evaluate and compare the accuracy of postoperative refractive error prediction between these two devices in eyes with short AL (≤ 22 mm).
Main Methods:
- A comparative study involving 48 eyes from 29 patients with short AL.
- Measurements of axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), keratometry (K), and lens thickness (LT) were obtained using both IOLMaster® 700 and ARGOS® prior to cataract surgery.
- Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to assess agreement, and prediction errors were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Both devices demonstrated high agreement in ocular biometry measurements (ICCs > 0.95).
- Significant differences were found in AL and ACD measurements, with shorter values recorded by the IOLMaster® 700 (p < 0.001).
- No significant difference in mean absolute prediction errors was observed (p = 0.423), though IOLMaster® 700 showed a slightly lower mean prediction error (+0.12 D vs. +0.20 D, p = 0.006).
Conclusions:
- IOLMaster® 700 and ARGOS® exhibit good agreement in ocular biometry for short eyes, but significant differences in AL and ACD measurements exist.
- Both SS-OCT biometers are effective and comparable in predicting postoperative refractive errors, with high percentages of eyes within ±0.50 D and ±1.00 D of the target refraction.
