Detection of Black Holes01:10

Detection of Black Holes

2.5K
Although black holes were theoretically postulated in the 1920s, they remained outside the domain of observational astronomy until the 1970s.
Their closest cousins are neutron stars, which are composed almost entirely of neutrons packed against each other, making them extremely dense. A neutron star has the same mass as the Sun but its diameter is only a few kilometers. Therefore, the escape velocity from their surface is close to the speed of light.
Not until the 1960s, when the first neutron...

Summary

This study explores seismic quiescence patterns, identifying precursor stages (α and β) before large earthquakes (M>7) in Mexico. Spatiotemporal variants of the Schreider algorithm show advantages in detecting these earthquake precursors.

Area of Science:

  • Geophysics
  • Seismology
  • Earthquake prediction

Background:

  • Seismic quiescence, periods of reduced earthquake activity, may precede major seismic events.
  • Identifying reliable precursors is crucial for earthquake forecasting, especially in seismically active regions like the Mexican subduction zone.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To implement and evaluate Schreider's quiescence algorithm and its spatiotemporal variants for identifying seismic quiescence patterns.
  • To characterize the stages of seismic quiescence that may precede large earthquakes (M>7) in the Mexican subduction zone.

Main Methods:

  • Application of Schreider's quiescence algorithm and two spatiotemporal variants.
  • Analysis of seismic data from the Mexican subduction zone, focusing on earthquake occurrences.
  • Identification and characterization of distinct quiescence stages (α and β) based on algorithm output.

Main Results:

  • Two characteristic stages of seismic quiescence (α and β) were identified.
  • The standard Schreider algorithm struggles to detect quiescence when large earthquakes (M>7) occur closely in space and time.
  • Spatiotemporal variants demonstrated advantages when the algorithm was restarted after mainshocks.

Conclusions:

  • The study provides a deeper understanding of precursory seismic quiescence stages.
  • Spatiotemporal variants of the quiescence algorithm show promise for identifying earthquake precursors in the Mexican subduction zone.
