A longer health resort stay significantly improves long COVID symptoms and functional status. Approximately four weeks of comprehensive sanatorium treatment is recommended for better recovery outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Rehabilitation Medicine
- Long COVID Research
- Public Health
Background:
- Health resort treatment shows positive effects on long COVID symptoms.
- Therapy duration's impact on long COVID treatment effectiveness remains understudied.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate if treatment duration predicts effectiveness in long COVID patients undergoing health resort therapy.
- To analyze the correlation between extended sanatorium stays and symptom improvement.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 119 long COVID patients (mean age 63.04).
- Patients divided into shorter and prolonged therapy groups.
- Assessed dyspnea (mMRC), physical performance (SPPB), functional status (PCFS), and symptom severity.
Main Results:
- Prolonged stays (Group 2) showed significantly greater improvement in functional status (1.41 vs 0.59 points).
- Extended stays correlated with significant improvements in sleep, memory, and headaches.
- A longer stay was associated with improved functional status (β = 0.033, p = 0.003).
Conclusions:
- Prolonged health resort stays positively impact long COVID symptom severity.
- Approximately four weeks of treatment improves functional status and alleviates neuropsychiatric symptoms.
- Prospective research is needed to confirm these retrospective findings.
