Summary

Antiviral therapy for acute hepatitis B (AHB) shows limited data on HBsAg seroconversion. Older age independently predicts a lower likelihood of HBsAg seroconversion in patients with AHB receiving antiviral treatment.

Background:

  • Limited data exists on antiviral therapy's impact on HBsAg seroconversion in acute hepatitis B (AHB).
  • Understanding factors influencing seroconversion is crucial for managing AHB patients undergoing treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate factors associated with HBsAg seroconversion in adult patients with AHB receiving antiviral treatment.
  • To identify predictors of successful HBsAg seroconversion in this patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, multicenter study of 107 adult patients with AHB treated between January 2018 and December 2023.
  • Analysis of 70 patients with 24-week follow-up, comparing those with and without HBsAg seroconversion.
  • Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors of HBsAg seroconversion.

Main Results:

  • Age was independently associated with HBsAg seroconversion (OR=0.926, 95% CI 0.874-0.981, p=0.009).
  • Each one-year increase in age correlated with a 0.926-fold decrease in the odds of HBsAg seroconversion.
  • Male gender was observed in 66.3% of patients; median age was 48 years.

Conclusions:

  • Age is an independent predictor of HBsAg seroconversion in patients with acute hepatitis B virus infection.
  • Older patients receiving antiviral therapy for AHB may have a reduced likelihood of achieving HBsAg seroconversion.
