Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate nurse practitioner (NP) roles during the peri-operative period.
  • To assess the association between NP interventions and healthcare outcomes, including length of stay (LOS), post-operative emergency department (ED) visits, and 30-day readmissions.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective observational study was conducted at an Israeli tertiary care centre (2022-2023).
  • 188 patients from Paediatric Orthopaedics, General Surgery, and Breast and Stoma Services were included.
  • Data on interventions and outcomes (LOS, ED visits, readmissions) were collected and analyzed using multivariate regression.

Main Results:

  • Nurse practitioners performed an average of 6.7 interventions per patient.
  • Moderate-to-high pre-operative NP interventions correlated with shorter LOS.
  • Moderate-to-high post-hospital NP interventions were linked to fewer ED visits and lower 30-day readmission rates.

Conclusions:

  • NP interventions in pre-operative and post-hospital phases significantly improve patient outcomes.
  • Optimizing NP roles in peri-operative care can reduce hospital LOS, ED visits, and readmissions.
  • Expanding NP roles enhances care continuity and patient recovery trajectories.
