Experimental Designs

16.6K
An experimental design is a systematic process that allows researchers to evaluate the relationship between dependent and independent variables. There are three widely used types of experimental design - pre-experimental design, true experimental design, and quasi-experimental design. In pre-experimental design, the researcher compares the data before and after some interventions or treatments. The true-experimental design has more than one purposefully created group, a commonly measured...

Summary

This study identifies informatics tools for Target Trial Emulations (TTEs), a method to emulate randomized controlled trials using observational data. Gaps exist in design phase tools, highlighting the need for improved informatics support for TTEs.

Area of Science:

  • Health Informatics
  • Observational Studies
  • Causal Inference

Background:

  • Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are ideal but not always feasible.
  • Observational data is increasingly used for causal effect estimation.
  • Target Trial Emulations (TTEs) offer a framework to minimize bias in observational studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify informatics tools supporting the design and conduct of TTEs.
  • To assess the current landscape of tools for emulating clinical trials.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review of informatics tools for TTEs.
  • Categorization of tools across three TTE phases: Design, Implementation, and Analysis.
  • Evaluation of tool support for seven distinct TTE steps.

Main Results:

  • 24 distinct informatics tools were identified for TTEs.
  • Significant gaps in tool support were found for the Design Phase (3 tools).
  • Support was more variable for Implementation (5 tools) and Analysis (19 tools) phases.

Conclusions:

  • Current informatics tools offer limited support for the Design Phase of TTEs.
  • No single tool covers all TTE aspects, and interoperability is lacking.
  • Further development of integrated informatics tools is crucial for effective TTEs.
