Korean Medicine doctors (KMDs) seek enhanced continuing professional development (CPD) with more practical training and competency-centered curricula. Improvements are needed in social accountability and clinical management to advance Korean Medicine practice.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Continuing Professional Development
- Korean Medicine
Background:
- Continuing professional development (CPD) is crucial for healthcare professionals.
- Korean Medicine doctors (KMDs) require tailored CPD to meet evolving healthcare demands.
- Assessing the current status and needs of KMDs' CPD is essential for practice advancement.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the current status of CPD for Korean Medicine doctors (KMDs).
- To identify the specific needs and areas for improvement in KMDs' continuing education and residency training.
- To establish future directions for enhancing CPD programs in Korean Medicine.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional survey was administered to all Korean Medicine doctors (KMDs).
- Data were collected from 624 KMDs between October 23 and November 5, 2024.
- The questionnaire assessed satisfaction with continuing education, perceived competency development, and improvement needs.
Main Results:
- CPD programs were most effective for patient care competencies, but less so for social accountability and clinical management (approx. 40% minimal improvement).
- KMDs most frequently requested expanded practical training (63.0%) and curriculum improvements (37.0%).
- Residency training priorities included competency-centered curricula (65.0%) and standardized educational programs (63.3%).
Conclusions:
- KMDs advocate for increased practical training, standardized competency-based curricula, and expanded scope of practice.
- Developing robust competency frameworks and strengthening modern healthcare competencies are vital for Korean Medicine.
- Institutional support is necessary to facilitate these advancements in KMDs' professional development.
