Abstract:
This paper represents novel single-stage modular 3-phase PFC (Power Factor Correction) converter featuring Riccati predictive current controllers for a WECS (Wind Energy Conversion System), improving efficiency moreover mitigating toxic emissions. On an average, a 1 MW wind turbine prevents approximately 2000 to 2500 tons of carbon emissions per year, which is equivalent to the carbon emissions produced by more than 300 vehicles. The proposed work implements a practical DC-DC Second Degree Boost Converter (SDBC) for PFC in WECS and adopts pq theory to effectively manage power quality issues such as THD (Total Harmonic Distortion), voltage unbalance, enhance the power factor and ensure efficient energy usage. An equivalent circuit for the non-ideal SDBC is constructed, and its small-signal model is obtained followed by cascade control of voltage and current loops. The suggested Riccati Predictive Control approach ensures that the supply currents remain sinusoidal with a near unity PF (Power Factor) of 0.998 along with low THD of 1.24% for servo and regulatory applications. MATLAB/Simulink has been utilized in simulating proposed system, with reference currents produced in conditions of balanced supply voltage using pq theory. Efficient operation of the SDBC has been validated under MOSFET fault conditions using a DSPIC30F2010 controller for a 300 W prototype. The findings support the reliability of the proposed technique, demonstrating improved performance in terms of power quality indices like % THD of 1.24, PF of 0.998 and also with an efficiency of above 96% and a settling time of nearly 1 s.
