Development of Fungal-Resistant Transgenic Fennel Plant

Abstract:
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), a key spice crop in India, is valued for its flavor and medicinal properties but faces significant yield losses (15-30%) due to fungal diseases. Traditional breeding for fungal resistance in fennel is slow and limited, while genetic engineering offers a faster and more effective solution. The development of fungal-resistant transgenic fennel plants through genetic engineering is a key approach to minimize this yield loss. Key defense genes such as chitinase can be introduced into fennel to enhance its immune response to fungal pathogens. These genes, sourced from plants and fungi, are essential in degrading fungal cell walls and inhibiting growth. This approach offers a sustainable solution to increasing fennel production and reducing the impact of fungal diseases, ensuring higher yields and meeting rising market demands.
