Solving the pill puzzle: supporting medication adherence in the community
1Freelance healthcare writer.
Abstract:
It has been suggested that between a third and a half of all medicines prescribed for long-term conditions are not taken as recommended. Medication non-adherence has a negative impact on individual patients and the wider healthcare system, resulting in inadequate disease control, decreased quality of life and increased morbidity, hospitalisations and healthcare costs. Understanding the socioeconomic, behavioural and psychological factors underlying medication non-adherence, and the most effective strategies that community nurses can employ to support patients in self-management, is critical to achieving healthier communities and reduced healthcare costs.
