Abstract:
KRISS developed a certified reference material (CRM) for measuring 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K radioactivities in building materials to support successful compliance with regulatory guidelines aimed at maintaining indoor radon concentration levels at appropriate levels. Candidate materials (natural stones) were homogenized, characterized, and tested for homogeneity to international standards using gamma-ray spectrometry. The CRM will provide reliable quality assurance and quality control to testing laboratories that analyze natural radionuclides contained in building materials, thereby increasing the reliability of measurement results and ensuring that construction complies with national safety standards.
