Sexual inexperience and inactivity are rising in Japan, with about half of young adults and 10% of those in their 30s remaining sexually inexperienced. Many also report no interest in sexual relationships, highlighting a growing trend in Japanese sexual behavior.

Background:

High rates of sexual inexperience and inactivity in Japan have garnered international attention.
Understanding these trends is crucial for public health and societal well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a scoping review of population-based data on sexual inexperience and inactivity in Japan.
To analyze trends and related variables from 1974 to 2024.

Main Methods:

Scoping review of 38 publications (English and Japanese).
Included 43 surveys presenting population-based data.
Data spanned January 1, 1974, to September 15, 2024.

Main Results:

Sexual inexperience has increased, with ~50% of Japanese in their mid-twenties and ~10% in their thirties remaining inexperienced.
High prevalence of sexual inactivity noted, though data reliability varied.
A significant portion of the population reported no interest in sexual relationships.

Conclusions:

Sexual inexperience and inactivity appear to be increasing trends in Japan.
Further research is needed to understand the underlying causes and implications.
Hypotheses regarding sexual inactivity in Japan are proposed based on reviewed data.
