Impression Management Techniques I: Managing Appearances01:29

Impression Management Techniques I: Managing Appearances

198
Appearance is a multidimensional aspect of self-presentation that encompasses observable attributes such as clothing, grooming, speech, and nonverbal behavior. These elements are often strategically managed to align with socially constructed expectations in different settings. For instance, individuals tailor their appearance during job interviews, social gatherings, or athletic events to meet the perceived norms of those environments.Contextual Adaptation and Social SignalsThe research...

Therapeutic Communication01:30

Therapeutic Communication

7.1K
Communication is a lifelong learning process. Through therapeutic communication, nurses can collect relevant assessment data, provide education and counseling, and interact during nursing interventions. Sending and receiving messages occur through verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and can happen separately or simultaneously.
Verbal communication depends on language or a prescribed way of using words so that people can share information effectively. The critical aspects of verbal...

Non-Verbal Cues

283
Non-verbal communication extends beyond gestures and facial expressions to include vocal elements known as paralanguage. Paralanguage consists of non-verbal vocal cues such as pitch, loudness, speech rate, pauses, and non-verbal vocalizations like laughter, sighs, and moans. These elements not only accompany speech but also provide critical emotional and contextual information. The Role of Paralanguage in CommunicationParalanguage adds depth to spoken language by conveying emotions and...

Communication

8.7K
Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction.

Communication

9.4K
Sharing information, concepts, and emotions to foster mutual understanding is communication. The sender, recipient, and transaction must be considered in this manner. The sender is the person who shares the message, the recipient is the person who receives and understands the message, and the transaction is the method used to deliver the message and the variables that affect the communication's context and surroundings. The nurse-client connection is built on therapeutic communication.

Channels of Non-Verbal Communication01:28

Channels of Non-Verbal Communication

344
Non-verbal communication plays a critical role in human interaction, influencing how individuals perceive emotions and psychological states. It operates through four primary channels: facial expressions, eye contact, body language, and touch. These non-verbal cues help convey meaning beyond spoken language and are often culturally influenced.Facial Expressions and Emotional RecognitionFacial expressions are among the most powerful and universal forms of non-verbal communication. Research has...

Summary

People intuitively recognize communicative intention in pantomimes when actions have partial affordance. Recognizing instrumental goals and suboptimal conditions enhances the communicative signal, revealing a novel mechanism for interpreting actions.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Science
  • Psychology
  • Human Communication

Background:

  • Pantomimes pose a challenge in distinguishing communicative intention from instrumental action.
  • Two hypotheses exist: instrumental intention competes with or is nested within communicative intention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate how people intuitively recognize communicative intention in pantomimes.
  • To test the relationship between instrumental and communicative intention in action perception.
  • To explore the role of affordance in interpreting communicative intent.

Main Methods:

  • Compiled a video dataset of action-object pairs.
  • Qualitatively varied scene affordance to support or hinder action execution.
  • Conducted two empirical experiments measuring communicative ratings.

Main Results:

  • A nonmonotonic relationship was found between affordance and communicative ratings.
  • Partial affordance (some support for instrumental purpose) elicited the strongest perception of communicative intention.
  • Recognizing instrumental components of actions predicted higher communicativeness.

Conclusions:

  • Humans can interpret novel pantomimes by recognizing instrumental goals and suboptimal conditions.
  • This study reveals a novel mechanism for communicative intention perception.
  • The rationality principle aids in distinguishing communicative intention and identifying embedded instrumental content.
