Development of migraine self-care scale

Self-care is known to have the ability to lessen the frequency and intensity of chronic migraines, thereby enhancing the patient's functional ability and quality of life. No scale has been found in the literature to assess self-care in chronic migraine patients. This study was carried out as an initial investigation of a scale that would be created to evaluate migraine sufferers' self-care. 156 migraine-diagnosed patients who applied to the neurology outpatient clinic between March and June 2024 and met the sampling criteria participated in this methodological study. The research data were obtained using the Personal Information Form and the Migraine Self-Care Scale. Migraine self-care measurements were tested by performing validity and reliability analyses. Exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and the content validity index were used to analyze the data's validity. Reliability analysis was performed using Pearson's product-moment correlation and Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient. The Migraine Self-Care Scale adapted for individuals diagnosed with migraine has a three-dimensional structure consisting of 14 items. To evaluate the stability of the scale over time, test-retest measurements were made at least two weeks apart, and there was no variation in the average scores. (p > .05). The construct validity of the Migraine Self-Care Scale was confirmed with an adjusted goodness-of-fit index (AGFI) > 0.85 and a comparative fit index (CFI) > 0.92. The content validity index of each item was 99%. The adjusted item-total correlations of the scale ranged from 0.347 to 0.599. The internal consistency Cronbach's alpha value was found to be 0.780. The scale has a minimum possible value of 14 and a maximum possible value of 56. This study has shown that the Migraine Self-Care Scale is valid and reliable. It might be claimed that migraine sufferers' self-care increases in tandem with their scale score. It can be used as a measurement tool to determine the self-care of migraine patients.
