Case:
A 63-year-old woman presented with acute right knee pain 10 weeks after total knee arthroplasty. The patient was found to have a periprosthetic joint infection and large thigh and calf abscess with Streptococcus intermedius requiring repeat irrigation and debridement, antibiotics, and a 2-stage joint revision. Periprosthetic joint infection with S. intermedius has not been reported.
Conclusion:
For these abscess-forming bacteria, a whole-body positron emission tomography with computed tomography scan was helpful to diagnose the extent of infection, exclude distant infection and successfully guide treatment.
