Hydrogen selenide (H2Se) is an emerging bioactive molecule associated with several physiological and pathological processes. To clarify the effects of H2Se in biological systems, the development of highly selective H2Se detection tools is essential. Herein, we rationally designed a series of potential H2Se probes based on nitroaromatic reduction followed by a self-immolative process and discovered a new H2Se detection platform (Nap-NO2-mCl). Nap-NO2-mCl exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for H2Se, making it an effective tool for monitoring triggered-release H2Se and exogenous H2Se in living cells.
