A Cross-Language Study of Oral Diadochokinesis: Rates and Rhythm

Introduction:
Oral diadochokinesis (DDK) is a commonly used task in assessing motor development and disorders. Previous research has largely assumed its language-universal applicability, though evidence is limited. This study compared oral DDK performance (/pʌ/, /pʌtʌkʌ/) between two groups of speakers with different native languages, focusing on DDK rates and rhythm.
Methods:
Participants included 56 young adults, with 28 American English speakers and 28 Korean speakers. Acoustic measures included DDK rates and normalized pairwise variability index (nPVI) of syllable and intersyllable interval durations.
Results:
Group differences were found for /pʌtʌkʌ/ but not for /pʌ/, such that English speakers showed decreased repetition rates and increased nPVI for both syllable and intersyllable interval durations compared to Korean speakers.
Conclusion:
DDK has been frequently used in studies of motor speech development and disorders with a notable increase especially in the last decade. Our findings reveal language-specific characteristics and highlight the need for language-specific reference data in research and clinical practice.
