Genome Annotation and Assembly03:36

Genome Annotation and Assembly

20.5K
The genome refers to all of the genetic material in an organism. It can range from a few million base pairs in microbial cells to several billion base pairs in many eukaryotic organisms. Genome assembly refers to the process of taking the DNA sequencing data and putting it all back together in a correct order to create a close representation of the original genome. This is followed by the identification of functional elements on the newly assembled genome, a process called genome annotation.

Plant Breeding and Biotechnology

21.5K
Crop cultivation has a long history in human civilization, with records showing the cultivation of cereal plants beginning at around 8000 BC. This early plant breeding was developed primarily to provide a steady supply of food.

Pollination and Flower Structure02:40

Pollination and Flower Structure

75.2K
Flowers are the reproductive, seed-producing structures of angiosperms. Typically, flowers consist of sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels. Sepals and petals are the vegetative flower organs. Stamens and carpels are the reproductive organs.

Area of Science:

  • Botany
  • Genomics
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • The Apiales order includes diverse and valuable species like vegetables, spices, and medicinal herbs.
  • Apiaceae and Araliaceae are key families within Apiales, extensively studied for their economic and medicinal importance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To address the lack of large-scale genomic analysis and database platforms for the Apiales order.
  • To conduct a comprehensive genomic analysis and construct a dedicated database for Apiales species.

Main Methods:

  • Comparative genomic analysis using bioinformatics tools.
  • Database construction utilizing MySQL, the Django framework, and multiple programming languages.

Main Results:

  • Clarified phylogenetic associations and paleo-polyploidization within Apiales.
  • Determined ancestral karyotypes and analyzed chromosomal evolutionary pathways.
  • Established the Apiales Genome Resources Database (TAGR) for public access.

Conclusions:

  • Unraveled the genomic evolution and chromosomal karyotypes of Apiales species.
  • The TAGR database provides researchers with efficient access to omics data for genomic analysis and molecular breeding.
