Background:
Bone fracture nonunion or delayed union is a serious complication of long-bone fractures, characterized by inadequate bone regeneration and osteogenesis. The postoperative consequences of bone nonunion significantly affect patients' quality of life and functionality, leading to a range of complications that impose a substantial economic and medical burden. Understanding the current state and emerging directions in this field is essential for guiding future research. This study aims to analyze relevant publications through a bibliometric approach, identifying the research status, hotspots, and trends in the field of bone fracture nonunion.
Methods:
A comprehensive scientometric review of publications on fracture nonunion over a specified period was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). Multiple bibliometric analysis techniques were employed to assess annual trends, institutional and national contributions, influential journals, authors, keywords, and co-occurrence references, thereby revealing present hotspots and potential future advancements in this area.
Results:
A total of 10,847 English-language publications were identified and analyzed, showing a consistent rise in the number of annual publications. The most prolific countries, institutions, influential journals, and the most highly cited and co-cited authors were identified. Key areas representing the current status and future frontiers in the field include epidemiology and risk factors, clinical studies, macrophage mechanisms in bone healing, economic analysis, finite element analysis, and 3D printing technology.
Conclusions:
This comprehensive analysis of the knowledge base and research frontiers provides valuable insights into the current landscape of bone fracture nonunion research. It also serves as a reliable reference to stimulate future advancements and foster continued interest among researchers in this field.

Fractures: Bone Repair
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...
