Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate longitudinal changes in qEEG activity in MDD patients undergoing treatment.
  • To identify qEEG state-markers associated with treatment response and clinical improvement in MDD.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 70 MDD patients and 98 healthy controls (HC).
  • Acquired resting-state qEEG at baseline (T0), early treatment (T1), and late treatment (T2).
  • Categorized patients into responders (≥50% HDRS-21 reduction) and non-responders; analyzed absolute band power and correlated qEEG with HDRS/HARS scores.

Main Results:

  • MDD responders exhibited longitudinal reductions in delta power, moving towards HC levels, with marginal increases in gamma activity.
  • Non-responders displayed persistently elevated delta and alpha power across all sessions.
  • Reduced fronto-central delta and increased left fronto-central gamma power correlated with improved depression and anxiety.

Conclusions:

  • MDD responders demonstrated state-dependent electrophysiological normalization during treatment.
  • Non-responders showed stable, unchanged qEEG patterns consistent with their persistent depressive state.
  • qEEG state-markers are valuable for monitoring clinical progress in depression.
