Longitudinal Research

13.1K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

477
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

273
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Social Foundations of Self IV: Self in Digital Communication

167
Since the early 2000s, computer-mediated communication (CMC) has grown rapidly, playing a crucial role in self-development. A key distinction between CMC and real-life interactions is the lack of a physically present partner. This absence makes non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and paralinguistic signals unavailable in CMC platforms like email, instant messaging, or social media. The lack of these cues can create ambiguity and complicate how feedback is interpreted.The...

Long-term Depression01:03

Long-term Depression

3.1K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Area of Science:

  • Digital mental health
  • Adolescent psychology
  • Public health interventions

Background:

  • Youth mental health challenges are rising, with schools being ideal yet under-resourced settings for support.
  • Digital mental health tools offer a scalable solution to bridge this gap.
  • The Alongside program is a digital tool for universal prevention and early intervention, featuring social-emotional learning and an AI chatbot for coping skills.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the immediate impact of the Alongside digital program on students' self-reported mental health.
  • To assess changes in psychological distress among adolescent users of a digital mental health application.

Main Methods:

  • A nonrandomized pilot pragmatic evaluation using anonymized data from middle and high school students (ages 10-18) in Texas and New Mexico.
  • Mental health questionnaires were administered at registration, 1 month, and 3 months post-registration.
  • Preregistered and exploratory analyses examined changes in distress over time and predictive factors.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant decrease in overall distress was observed from baseline to 1 month (p=.03, r=0.34), with no significant change from baseline to 3 months (p=.16).
  • Identifying as LGBTQIA+ predicted greater distress reduction at 3 months; no other demographic factors were significant predictors.
  • Exploratory analysis of users with elevated baseline distress showed significant reductions at both 1 month (p=.02, r=0.52) and 3 months (p=.004, r=0.45).

Conclusions:

  • The Alongside digital program may offer short-term mental health benefits for youth.
  • Further investigation is necessary to establish the long-term preventative efficacy of digital mental health interventions like Alongside.
