Abstract:
During the last ten years, there has been generated a lot of insights in the mechanisms and pathophysiology behind chronic cough. In some countries, tertiary cough clinics have been established, but not in Denmark. This review finds it is important to have a diagnostic workup that is in balance with the national healthcare system. The neuroplasticity of the brain may enhance cough and cause the cough hypersensitivity syndrome. The development of drugs targeting the P2X3 receptor will hopefully introduce a new era in the treatment of chronic cough.
