Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.7K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Binet's Contribution to Measures of Intelligence

1.7K
Alfred Binet, along with his student Théophile Simon, was tasked by the French Ministry of Education in 1904 to create a method for identifying students who struggled to learn through conventional classroom instruction. This initiative aimed to address overcrowding by placing such students in specialized schools. Binet and Simon developed an intelligence test comprising 30 tasks, ranging from simple commands, like touching one's nose or ear, to more complex tasks, such as drawing...

Correlations02:20

Correlations

35.8K
Correlation means that there is a relationship between two or more variables (such as ice cream consumption and crime), but this relationship does not necessarily imply cause and effect. When two variables are correlated, it simply means that as one variable changes, so does the other. We can measure correlation by calculating a statistic known as a correlation coefficient. A correlation coefficient is a number from -1 to +1 that indicates the strength and direction of the relationship between...

Information Processing Approach

518
The information-processing theory of cognitive development centers on fundamental mental processes, including attention, memory, and problem-solving skills. Researchers in this field examine how cognitive abilities, such as working memory, evolve and influence children's overall development. Studies indicate that children with stronger working memory tend to excel in reading comprehension, math, and problem-solving compared to peers with less efficient memory skills. Low working memory is...

Measures of Intelligence01:29

Measures of Intelligence

8.3K
Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization.
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this;...

Summary

Excessive screen time in young children is linked to lower academic achievement in elementary school reading and math. Reducing screen time may improve educational outcomes for children.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric primary care research
  • Childhood development studies
  • Educational psychology

Background:

  • Limited research exists on the long-term effects of various screen time types on children's academic success.
  • Understanding these associations is crucial for developing targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the longitudinal relationship between different forms of screen time in early childhood and academic performance in elementary school.
  • To assess associations with standardized test results in grades 3 and 6.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective cohort study involving 3322 third graders and 2084 sixth graders from the TARGet Kids! cohort in Ontario, Canada.
  • Parent-reported screen time data (total, TV/digital media, video games) were linked to provincial standardized achievement test scores in reading, writing, and math.
  • Adjusted proportional odds models were used to analyze the associations.

Main Results:

  • Each additional hour of total screen time was associated with 9-10% lower odds of achieving higher academic levels in grade 3 reading and math, and grade 6 math.
  • Higher TV and digital media use correlated with lower achievement in grade 3 reading/math and grade 6 math.
  • Video game use was linked to lower grade 3 reading achievement, particularly among female students.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated total screen time and TV/digital media consumption in young children are associated with diminished academic achievement in elementary school.
  • Findings suggest a need for early interventions aimed at reducing screen time to foster better academic outcomes.
