Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

973
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Language and Cognition01:27

Language and Cognition

711
Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. This discussion gained grip with Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf in the 1940s, who proposed that language determines thought, a concept known as linguistic determinism. They suggested that the vocabulary and structure of a language influence how its speakers think and perceive reality.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder01:30

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

624
A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

758
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It affects approximately 5-8% of children globally, with around 60-70% of cases persisting into adulthood. ADHD has significant implications for educational attainment, social interactions, and occupational success.
Diagnostic Criteria and Symptoms
To diagnose ADHD, symptoms must manifest before age 12 and be evident across multiple settings....

Higher Mental Functions of the Brain: Language

3.4K
Language is a system of communication that allows the expression of thoughts, ideas, and feelings. The brain processes language in both hemispheres.
Language formation and comprehension take place in the dominant hemisphere. The dominant hemisphere is responsible for understanding the meaning of spoken, written, or sign language, as well as the ability to communicate. For most people, the left hemisphere is the dominant one. The right hemisphere, then, gives tone and emotional context to the...

Hearing01:31

Hearing

56.5K
When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Summary

Auditory processing disorder (APD) is common in children with speech sound errors. This study found high rates of APD in children with specific misarticulations, highlighting the need for auditory assessments before speech therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Speech-Language Pathology
  • Audiology
  • Developmental Pediatrics

Background:

  • Auditory processing is crucial for childhood phonetic development.
  • Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) can contribute to speech sound difficulties.
  • Specific speech sound errors may be linked to underlying auditory processing deficits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of APD in children exhibiting misarticulations of specific speech sounds (/r/, /s/, /k/, /θ/, /dʒ/, /q/).
  • To explore the relationship between different types of articulation disorders and the presence of APD.
  • To determine if certain speech sound errors are more strongly associated with APD.

Main Methods:

  • 51 children aged 6-18 with articulation disorders participated.
  • Peripheral auditory function was assessed via otoscopy, immittance, and audiometry.
  • Central auditory processing was evaluated using a standardized test battery.

Main Results:

  • Abnormalities in central auditory processing were identified in 72.55% (37/51) of participants.
  • High correlations between APD and specific misarticulations were observed: 100% for /θ/ and /q/, 83.3% for /ʤ/, 80% for /k/, 69.5% for /r/, and 40% for /s/.
  • The incidence of APD varied significantly based on the misarticulated speech sound.

Conclusions:

  • The association between articulation disorders and APD is sound-specific.
  • Further research is warranted to clarify the complex relationship between various articulation disorders and APD.
  • Screening for central auditory system function is recommended for children with articulation disorders prior to speech therapy intervention.
