Assessing pharmacists' knowledge and practices involving dietary supplement omega-3 fatty acids

Objective:
A survey was created to assess the knowledge and clinical practices of licensed pharmacists related to omega-3 fatty acid dietary supplements (OM3FA-DS).
Methods:
The survey was distributed online to licensed pharmacists who were members of 5 different state pharmacy associations or were members of 2 "practice and research networks" (ambulatory care and cardiology) of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Results:
A total of 583 pharmacists completed the survey, with 64% recommending and 28% not recommending OM3FA-DS. Those recommending OM3FA-DS did so primarily for heart health and elevated triglycerides. Side effect counseling was reported as always or often by 41%. Odor and gastrointestinal effects were the most identified side effects. Bleeding and drug-drug interactions were reported by 42% and 37%, respectively. Of those who recommend OM3FA-DS, almost 95% of respondents had concerns about the quality of the OM3FA-DS products. Improper labelling and strength/composition issues were the most common product quality concerns. Education and drug information resources concerning the use of OM3FA-DS and DS for hyperlipidemia were identified as an area needing improvement.
Conclusion:
Our survey demonstrated a substantial variability among pharmacists in their recommendations and counseling practices regarding OM3FA-DS. Despite concerns about the quality of DS products and a lack of guideline support for their use, 60% of pharmacists recommend OM3FA-DS. Respondents overwhelmingly expressed a need for improved information and education about DS in general, and OM3FA-DS in particular.
