Background:

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQIA+) mid-life to older adults face higher risks of social isolation and loneliness.
Social isolation and loneliness are linked to increased health problems within older adult and LGBTQIA+ populations.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore social health factors impacting LGBTQIA+ older adult communities.
To confirm the importance of attachments and social connections for the health of this demographic.

Main Methods:

Qualitative interviews were conducted with 33 participants.
The study focused on understanding social health factors affecting LGBTQIA+ communities.

Main Results:

Past research on the importance of attachments and social connections was confirmed.
Key factors impacting health included a lack of early positive family attachments, insufficient community mentorship, and fewer positive life-course social connections.
Participants identified increased social connections as a solution to social connection issues.

Conclusions:

Personalizing social experiences, fostering positive social connections, and developing intentional mentoring can enhance intergenerational programming.
Strengthening social connections within the broader LGBTQIA+ community is crucial for future growth and hope for aging populations.
