Pilot health education programme for patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate

Background:
Lack of disease knowledge and self-care skills increase the risk of complications and anxiety during transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) perioperative care.
Aims:
To test the feasibility and evaluate the effect of an innovative health education programme on patients' knowledge, anxiety, and self-care abilities.
Methods:
A quasi-experimental single-group pre-test/post-test design was adopted. Ten TURP patients received a multimodal intervention. Outcomes were assessed by using a self-developed benign prostatic hyperplasia knowledge questionnaire, the State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S), and the 7-Item Therapeutic Self-Care Scale (TSC-7). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests.
Findings:
Post-intervention, knowledge scores significantly increased (median: 16.50 to 23.00, P=0.005), self-care abilities improved (median: 28.50 to 32.00, P=0.005), and anxiety decreased (mean: 29.10 to 23.90, P<0.001). Patient satisfaction was exceptionally high (49.60/50).
Conclusions:
A self-regulation model-based health education programme appears to be feasible as a way to improve knowledge and self-care skills, and reduce anxiety in patients undergoing TURP.
