Objectives:
To compare the effects of leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) and advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) for the regeneration of mental nerve injury in rats, as evaluated by immunohistochemical analysis.
Materials And Methods:
Thirty rats were randomly assigned to three groups: control, l-PRF, and A-PRF. The left mental nerves of all rats were used in this study. A Yaşargil aneurysm clip was applied for 60 s to induce a crush injury. In the control group, the injured mental nerve was left to heal spontaneously. In the second group, l-PRF in membrane form was wrapped around the injury site. In the third group, A-PRF in membrane form was applied to the injured mental nerves.
Results:
Nerve samples taken from the rats were evaluated for immunoreactivity with beta III tubulin and S100 beta primary antibodies. Beta III tubulin immunoreactivity showed a significant difference between the l-PRF, A-PRF, and control groups. Similarly, when S100 beta primary antibody immunoreactivity was analyzed, a significant difference was observed between the control, l-PRF, and A-PRF groups.
Conclusions:
Both l-PRF and A-PRF demonstrated positive effects on axonal regeneration in the early stages. To further investigate the effects of l-PRF and A-PRF at different stages of nerve regeneration, additional experimental studies are needed.
