Family medicine: The missing mother specialty of MBBS
1Past President, WONCA World Organisation of Family Doctors, South Asia Region, Chairman Emeritus, Academy of Family Physicians of India, New Delhi, India.
Abstract:
MBBS opens multiple doors: clinical practice, specialization, research, public health, administration, entrepreneurship, or international careers. The process depends on competitive exams (NEET-PG, INI-CET, USMLE, PLAB, etc.). The outcomes range from general practice to superspecialization, leadership in health systems, or healthcare innovation. Family medicine is often referred to as the "mother discipline" because it encompasses comprehensive healthcare for individuals and families across all ages, genders, diseases, and body parts. Family medicine holds this central role in the medical field. Family Medicine is considered fundamental to the MBBS curriculum, especially in the context of India's medical education. However, this specialty training is entirely missing from the MBBS curriculum. The inclusion of Family Medicine as a formal specialty within the MBBS curriculum in India is an urgent and vital step toward strengthening the country's healthcare system. Family Medicine is the foundation of primary healthcare, emphasizing a holistic, patient-centered approach that treats the individual in their social, cultural, and community context. By formally integrating this specialty into the MBBS curriculum, India can transform its healthcare delivery landscape. Family Medicine equips future doctors with a broad skill set to manage a wide spectrum of health conditions across all age groups, fostering continuity of care. This is particularly critical given India's diverse population with varying health needs, socioeconomic backgrounds, and geographic disparities. A doctor trained in Family Medicine would serve not only as a first point of contact but also as a health advocate, preventive care provider, and community health promoter.
