Thiadiazole as a Promising Fragment to Discover Novel Agrochemicals: A Review

Abstract:
Thiadiazole is a five-membered heterocyclic compound that contains sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) atoms. The substance has a unique structure and diverse properties. This structural feature is indicative of a wide range of biological activities exhibited by thiadiazole derivatives, thus positioning them as key players in the domain of pesticide research and development. The development of highly effective pesticides is contingent upon a profound comprehension of the physical properties and precise analysis of their structure-activity relationships (SAR). To this end, this perspective provides a systematic review of the two main isomeric derivatives of thiadiazole (1,3,4-thiadiazole and 1,2,3-thiadiazole) in terms of their antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal, antiviral, herbicidal, and plant growth regulatory properties from 2014 to 2025. It is hypothesized that this review will provide a new theoretical basis and innovative perspective for discovering and evaluating effective thiadiazole pesticides and elucidating their mechanisms of action.
