Area of Science:

  • Laryngology
  • Medical Ultrasound
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Injection laryngoplasty (IL) is used for vocal fold augmentation.
  • Accurate measurement of injected material volume is crucial for IL outcomes.
  • Current methods for volume assessment can be imprecise.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of using low-cost handheld ultrasound to measure injected material volumes in vocal folds.
  • To assess the correlation between injected volume and ultrasound-measured cross-sectional area.

Main Methods:

  • A feasibility study using an ex vivo porcine model.
  • Injection of two volumes (0.375 mL, 0.75 mL) of hyaluronic acid (HA) and calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) into porcine vocal folds.
  • Ultrasound measurement of cross-sectional area and ANCOVA for correlation analysis.

Main Results:

  • Ultrasound successfully visualized HA and CaHA injections in porcine vocal folds.
  • Measured cross-sectional area significantly increased with larger injection volumes (P=0.0151).
  • Material type did not significantly impact measured area or its relation to injected volume.

Conclusions:

  • Handheld ultrasound shows feasibility for assessing injectate volume in vocal fold augmentation.
  • This technique could inform clinical decisions, such as timing of thyroplasty post-IL.
  • Further clinical studies are needed to validate its utility for voice outcomes.
