Background:

  • The Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) introduced a new impactful experience question.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the proportion and characteristics of applicants using the ERAS impactful experience question.
  • To analyze themes in impactful experience statements (IES) and compare them to personal statements (PS).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 1237 deidentified residency applications.
  • Thematic analysis of IES and PS using a developed category system.
  • Comparison of themes between IES and PS.

Main Results:

  • Only 46.7% of applicants submitted an IES.
  • Applicants submitting IES were more likely to be underrepresented minorities and DO or IMG.
  • Common IES themes included "other," "family background," and "financial background."
  • 83.6% of applicants with IES also discussed these themes in their PS.
  • 57.5% of applicants without IES had relevant experiences in their PS.

Conclusions:

  • Less than half of applicants utilize the impactful experience question.
  • Significant overlap exists between IES and PS content.
  • Further research is needed to understand non-utilization of the IES despite relevant experiences.
