Objective:
To understand the association between hypertriglyceridemia and hypertension in residents aged 35-75 in Jiangsu Province.
Methods:
Between May 26, 2021, and May 9, 2023, a comprehensive survey was carried out involving 81 499 permanent residents aged 35 to 75 across 22 districts and counties in 12 cities in Jiangsu Province. The survey encompassed questionnaires(detailing socioeconomic information, cardiovascular disease risk factors, etc. ), physical examinations(including height, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure), and laboratory tests(such as fasting blood glucose and lipid profiles). A non-conditional logistic regression analysis was employed to investigate the relationship between hypertriglyceridemia and hypertension.
Results:
The participants had an average age of(54.37±10.29) years. Of these, 33 700 were male(41.4%) and 47 799 were female(58.6%). Urban residents made up 61.7% of the total participants. There were 14 241 individuals diagnosed with hypertriglyceridemia, reflecting a prevalence rate of 17.47%. Among those with hypertriglyceridemia, 7168 also had hypertension, indicating a prevalence rate of 50.33%(36.36%, χ~2 =966.18, P<0.01), which was notably higher compared to individuals without hypertriglyceridemia. Upon adjusting for confounding variables such as age, gender, educational background, marital status, average annual household income, place of residence, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, hypercholesterolemia, elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, diabetes, and being overweight or obese, it was determined that hypertriglyceridemia significantly increases the risk of developing hypertension(OR=1.472, 95%CI 1.414-1.533).
Conclusion:
The prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia among adults over the age of 35 in Jiangsu Province is high, and hypertriglyceridemia increases the risk of hypertension.
