Timing and Consequences on Behavior01:08

Timing and Consequences on Behavior

352
In operant conditioning, the timing of reinforcement is crucial. For animals like rats and cats, immediate reinforcement (within a few seconds) is much more effective than delayed reinforcement. For example, a food reward for a rat needs to follow within 30 seconds of pressing a bar to be effective.
Humans, however, can respond to delayed reinforcers. We often make decisions between immediate small rewards and delayed larger rewards. This ability to delay gratification is a significant...

Strategies for Assessing and Addressing Confounding

359
Confounding is a critical issue in epidemiological studies, often leading to misleading conclusions about associations between exposures and outcomes. It occurs when the relationship between the exposure and the outcome is mixed with the effects of other factors that influence the outcome. Given that, addressing confounding is of high importance for drawing accurate inferences in research.
Confounding can be addressed at both the design phase of a study and through analytical methods after data...

Summary

Synthesized contingency assessments combine stimuli, but their reinforcing effects rarely exceed the sum of individual parts. This functional behavior assessment approach may overestimate combined contingency interactions in practice.

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Synthesized contingency assessments often combine multiple stimulus changes.
  • A core assumption is that these combined stimuli produce a reinforcing effect greater than the sum of their individual parts.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the consistency of within-participant evaluations with the assumption of synergistic interactions in synthesized contingencies.
  • To examine these interactions during and following functional behavior assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Reviewed three studies from the published literature.
  • Analyzed within-participant evaluations of synthesized contingency assessments.

Main Results:

  • Evidence for synergistic interactions between combined contingencies was found in a minority of cases.
  • The assumption that combined contingencies yield greater reinforcing effects than individual ones was not consistently supported.

Conclusions:

  • The synergistic interaction of combined contingencies is less common than assumed in functional behavior assessment.
  • Findings have implications for the practical application of synthesized contingency assessments.
