Knowledge and Awareness of Epilepsy Management, Etiologies, and Comorbidities Among Pediatricians in Jordan

Background: Pediatricians need adequate knowledge about epilepsy to effectively care for children with epilepsy (CWE). A cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted among pediatric residents and pediatricians in Jordan to assess their knowledge regarding epilepsy. Questions covered etiology, comorbidities, quality of life, long-term treatment, and first-aid management. 168 responses were received and analyzed per various demographic characteristics. Respondents generally had fair knowledge of epilepsy, with most of the questions answered correctly at least 50% of the time. Gaps of knowledge were most obvious with comorbidities. Around 50% of respondents did not know that children with epilepsy are at a higher risk of comorbidities, including inattention and aggression, and have difficulty maintaining relationships. Around 40% were not aware that epilepsy is associated with a higher risk of sudden unexpected death. Pediatric subspecialists answered significantly better than general pediatricians and pediatric residents. Targeted educational activities are needed to improve knowledge about epilepsy.
