Nociception—the ability to feel pain—is essential for an organism’s survival and overall well-being. Noxious stimuli such as piercing pain from a sharp object, heat from an open flame, or contact with corrosive chemicals are first detected by sensory receptors, called nociceptors, located on nerve endings. Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is a complex condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive dysfunction.
  • While central sensitization and monoamine imbalances are implicated, the interplay between symptom severity, mood, cognition, and treatment effects requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between fibromyalgia symptom severity, depressive symptoms, and cognitive function.
  • To compare cognitive performance and mood in untreated FM patients, treated FM patients, and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional case-control study involving 145 women (55 controls, 90 FM patients).
  • FM patients were categorized into untreated (n=48) and treated (n=42) groups.
  • Assessments included the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA).

Main Results:

  • Untreated FM patients exhibited significantly higher FIQ and BDI scores and lower MoCA total scores compared to treated patients and controls.

  • Fibromyalgia symptom severity is directly associated with the degree of depression and cognitive impairment.
  • These findings underscore the importance of routine affective and cognitive assessments in FM patient care.
  • A tailored, multidisciplinary approach to FM management, incorporating these assessments, is recommended.
