Abstract:
This letter explores recent innovations and challenges in beta cell replacement therapies for diabetes, emphasizing the gap between promising bioengineering techniques and clinical applicability. While advancements like stem cell-derived beta cells and bioartificial pancreas models show potential, concerns remain regarding immune rejection, maturation of beta cells, and long-term safety. Current strategies lack focus on type 2 diabetes, which constitutes the majority of cases. Moreover, issues such as vascularization, fibrosis, and ethical implications require further exploration. Bridging scientific breakthroughs with real-world application necessitates rigorous preclinical validation and scalability strategies to ensure safe, effective, and inclusive treatment for the global diabetic population.
