1From the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Brown University, Providence, RI (Singh), the UMass Chan Medical School, University of Massachusetts, Worcester, MA (McAnena), the Force Therapeutics, New York, NY (Harary), and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Department of Orthopaedics, Lebanon, NH (Schilling and Moschetti).
Nearly 95% of total hip arthroplasty (THA) patients reported satisfaction. Lower age and better mental health (PROMIS Mental scores) were linked to higher satisfaction. These findings highlight high patient satisfaction after THA.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Patient Outcomes Research
- Rehabilitation Medicine
Background:
- Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common procedure for severe hip osteoarthritis.
- Patient satisfaction after THA is less understood compared to total knee arthroplasty.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate patient satisfaction rates following total hip arthroplasty (THA).
- To identify factors predicting patient satisfaction after THA.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 1,414 THA patients using a web-based home therapy program.
- Stratification by 12-week postoperative satisfaction.
- Univariate and stepwise logistic regression analyses of demographics and functional outcomes.
Main Results:
- 94.4% of patients reported satisfaction with THA.
- Satisfied patients were younger and had higher BMIs and comorbidities.
- Preoperative and postoperative PROMIS scores and HOOS Jr. scores were significantly better in satisfied patients.
- Lower age and higher PROMIS Mental scores predicted satisfaction.
Conclusions:
- High patient satisfaction (nearly 95%) was observed in a modern THA cohort.
- Satisfied patients demonstrated superior functional outcomes.
- Age and mental health are potential predictors of satisfaction, supporting careful patient selection.
