Chalcones, a class of compounds characterized by a distinctive α, β-unsaturated carbonyl system bridging two aromatic rings, have shown great promise for applications in nonlinear optics (NLO). This review provides a comprehensive overview of the third-order NLO characteristics and optical limiting (OL) performance exhibited by chalcone derivatives analyzed by advanced spectroscopic techniques. The study explores the molecular structures influencing these properties and explores the potential of chalcones in developing advanced optical limiting devices. A critical analysis of experimental findings and theoretical models reveals the intricate relationship between chalcone structure and nonlinear optical response. Additionally, the review highlights recent advancements in the synthesis of novel chalcone derivatives designed to enhance their nonlinear optical performance. The insights gathered from this overview not only contribute to a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles governing chalcone-based nonlinear optics but also highlight the importance of these chalcone derivatives for practical utilization in OL-technology.
