Cognitive enhancers, also known as "smart drugs," are substances used to enhance memory, mental alertness, and concentration. These can be natural or synthetic and improve cognition in conditions like Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative diseases. Some common examples include caffeine, amphetamines, methylphenidate, modafinil, arecoline, donepezil, vortioxetine, and piracetam. These enhancers work on the principle of synaptic plasticity and altered circuit function.

Background:

  • Interactive Wall Exergames (IWE) show promise for improving cognitive functions in older adults.
  • The specific contributions of IWE's physical, motor-cognitive, and social components to cognitive benefits are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the cognitive benefits of a motor-cognitive-only IWE (IWE-) versus an IWE incorporating physical exercise (IWE+).
  • To determine if reducing IWE to its motor-cognitive elements diminishes cognitive enhancements in healthy older adults.

Main Methods:

  • 30 healthy older adults were randomized into IWE- or IWE+ groups for 8 weeks.
  • Interventions varied in duration (45 min for IWE-, 75 min for IWE+).
  • Cognitive, motor, and physical tests were administered pre- and post-intervention, alongside effort and enjoyment assessments.

  • Both groups demonstrated significant cognitive performance improvements over time.
  • No significant differences in cognitive, physical, or motor performance were found between the IWE- and IWE+ groups.
  • Adherence rates were high (>85%), with comparable effort and enjoyment levels across both groups.

  • The motor-cognitive component of Interactive Wall Exergames is crucial for enhancing cognitive performance in healthy older adults.
  • Incorporating additional aerobic and resistance exercises does not appear to significantly increase cognitive benefits compared to a motor-cognitive-only approach.
