Abstract:
Body image disturbances are central to the onset, maintenance, and relapse of eating disorders, yet research highlights the importance of positive body image as a distinct and potentially protective construct. Positive body image-characterized by respect, appreciation, and acceptance of one's body-has been linked to lower disordered eating and improved wellbeing in non-clinical samples, but its role in individuals with or at risk of an eating disorder remains underexplored. This editorial outlines key conceptual debates and identifies priority directions for integrating positive body image into prevention, treatment, and theoretical frameworks. To advance this work, the International Journal of Eating Disorders will publish a special issue on the theoretical and clinical relevance of positive body image in eating disorders, with an anticipated publication date in 2026.
