Field Application of Global Positioning System01:28

Field Application of Global Positioning System

315
The Global Positioning System (GPS) has become an indispensable tool in fieldwork, offering unparalleled precision and efficiency for surveying, navigation, and infrastructure development. By harnessing signals from a constellation of satellites, GPS receivers determine the location of objects with remarkable speed and accuracy, often completing calculations within a second.Advantages of Modern GPS TechnologyContemporary GPS receivers are designed to meet the practical demands of field...

Gyroscope01:02

Gyroscope

4.1K
A gyroscope is defined as a spinning disk in which the axis of rotation is free to assume any orientation. When spinning, the orientation of the spin axis is unaffected by the orientation of the body that encloses it. The body or vehicle enclosing the gyroscope can be moved from place to place, while the orientation of the spin axis remains the same. This makes gyroscopes very useful in navigation, especially where magnetic compasses cannot be used, such as in crewed and crewless spacecraft,...

Errors in Global Positioning System

330
Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has revolutionized navigation and positioning, but its accuracy is often compromised by various errors. These errors, stemming from environmental, satellite, and receiver-related factors, require careful mitigation to ensure reliable performance across applications.Atmospheric ErrorsGPS signals travel through the Earth’s ionosphere and troposphere, introducing delays which affect accuracy. The ionosphere is strongly influenced by charged particles,...

Types of Global Positioning System Surveys

346
GPS surveying methods vary in application, accuracy, and data collection techniques, catering to diverse surveying and mapping needs. Static GPS, kinematic GPS, and real-time kinematic (RTK) surveying are widely used. Each technique offers distinct advantages.Static GPS involves placing one receiver at a known reference point and another at the target point. It collects exact positional data by observing multiple satellite ranges over an extended period, achieving centimeter-level accuracy for...

Gyroscope: Precession01:24

Gyroscope: Precession

5.3K
Precession can be demonstrated effectively through a spinning top. If a spinning top is placed on a flat surface near the surface of the Earth at a vertical angle and is not spinning, it will fall over due to the force of gravity producing a torque acting on its center of mass. However, if the top is spinning on its axis, it precesses about the vertical direction, rather than topple over due to this torque. Precessional motion is a combination of a steady circular motion of the axis and the...

Design Example: Identifying the Locations of Monuments in the Field Using Global Positioning System Device

378
Surveyors use Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to measure the precise location and elevation of points on Earth. In a recent survey, GPS receivers were used to determine the coordinates and elevations of two park monuments. The process involved careful mission planning, data collection, and correction to ensure accuracy. The survey began with mission planning to identify optimal satellite visibility and minimize Position Dilution of Precision (PDOP). A geodetic control point...

Area of Science:

  • Mobile Sensing
  • Indoor Positioning Systems
  • Sensor Fusion

Background:

  • Smartphone sensor data often lacks precision for reliable indoor positioning.
  • Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) algorithms are susceptible to heading angle inaccuracies.
  • Existing Wi-Fi fingerprinting methods can suffer from sparse data density.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a precise indoor positioning algorithm for smartphones.
  • To improve the accuracy of the heading angle in PDR algorithms.
  • To enhance Wi-Fi fingerprint density for better localization.

Main Methods:

  • A gyroscope-constrained magnetometer Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) algorithm was proposed.
  • Kriging interpolation was used to double Wi-Fi signal fingerprint density.
  • An Extended Kalman Filter integrated the enhanced PDR and Wi-Fi positioning results.

Main Results:

  • The improved PDR algorithm reduced average positioning error from 2.02m to 1.07m.
  • The combined PDR and Wi-Fi system achieved an average error of 0.71m.
  • 90% of errors for the combined system were below 1.42m, a significant improvement.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed gyroscope-constrained magnetometer PDR algorithm enhances heading accuracy.
  • Kriging interpolation effectively increases Wi-Fi fingerprint density.
  • The integrated PDR and Wi-Fi positioning system offers superior indoor localization precision.
