Visual performance of a non-diffractive extended depth of focus intraocular lens
1Département d'ophtalmologie, hôpital de la Citadelle, boulevard du Douzième de Ligne 1, 4000 Liège, Belgique; Clinique de l'œil sec, rue du Pairay, 97, 4100 Seraing, Belgique.
Purpose:
This study aimed to evaluate the monocular and binocular visual performance of a new non-diffractive extended depth of focus (EDoF) intraocular lens (IOL).
Methods:
In this prospective, non-randomized, single-arm, single-center, open-label study, the eyes of consecutive patients who received bilateral implantation of a non-diffractive EDoF IOL (Acrysof IQ Vivity, Alcon Laboratories) were evaluated. Monocular and binocular best corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity (VA), as well as monocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity, were assessed.
Results:
Seventy-six eyes of 38 patients were included. The mean subjective spherical equivalent was -0.13. Binocular distance-corrected VA was -0.16 LogMAR at 6 meters, 0.12 LogMAR at 66 centimeters, and 0.35 LogMAR at 40 centimeters. Monocular distance-corrected VA was -0.10 LogMAR, 0.20 LogMAR, and 0.45 LogMAR at the same respective distances. Uncorrected VA at distance, intermediate, and near were -0.08 LogMAR, 0.14 LogMAR, and 0.33 LogMAR for binocular vision, and 0.00 LogMAR, 0.20 LogMAR, and 0.43 LogMAR for monocular vision. The monocular defocus curve was below 0.08 LogMAR up to -1.5 D defocus and below 0.25 LogMAR up to -2.0 D defocus. Average monocular contrast sensitivity peaked at 3.00 cycles/degree at 0.92 log units, decreasing at higher spatial frequencies. Most patients reported no visual disturbances post-implantation; 8% reported ghosting, and 5% reported glare.
Conclusion:
This non-diffractive extended depth of focus intraocular lens provides good visual acuity and quality at far and intermediate distances, functional near vision, and high spectacle-independent outcomes with minimal visual disturbances.

Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...
